Hand-Carved Glitch Furniture (2013)
by Ferruccio Laviani

VN-250521_S

The cabinet Good Vibrations is a prototype made by Ferruccio Laviani in collaboration with Fratelli Boffi, a company well known since 1928 for its Louis XV and Louis XVI style reproductions. It is entirely sculpted, carved and engraved using digital techniques, yet its origins lie in the strictest traditions of cabinetmaking. Playing with the effects of optics and perception, haziness and instability, Ferruccio Laviani humorously questions the very history of furniture in this piece.

Invited to collaborate with a manufacturer of baroque furniture, artist Ferruccio Laviani took an unconventional approach, programming computer-controlled robotic routers to cut glitches directly into the wood for a warped effect. The result is a series called ‘F* THE CLASSICS!’ and the most striking piece is the ‘Good Vibrations’ cabinet.

“In the course of my research for Good Vibrations, I ended up cutting out images from old analog videos, when you fast-forward a tape and get a frozen image that’s all twisted.”

 – Ferruccio Laviani
